Government under the Parish Development Model (PDM) will give every head of a family, who is registered in a parish SACCO, sh1m, the Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, has said.
“We shall give sh1 million to every head of a family through the SACCOs. I have friends in the Markets who tell you they only need sh100, 000 to invest and be able to pay their children's school fees. Imagine if you gave this person sh1million? It would make huge progress,” Nabbanja said during an interview with a local TV.
“We don't want people to politicise the PDM because poverty affects you individually regardless of your party. I want to call upon the people in the opposition to support this program. The difference between the original SACCO and the Parish Development Model SACCO is that these SACCOs are at the parish and get money straight from the government,” she added.
In February, President Yoweri Museveni launched PDM at Kibuku Primary School in the Bukedi sub-region, noting that the programme aims at helping people at the parish level to boost their household income.
“During the recently concluded elections, we promised you that the 2021-2026 term is going to be a Kisanja (term) for creating wealth, jobs and incomes for all Ugandans,” Museveni said, pledging to use PDM as a strategy to reach 39% of homesteads that are still in subsistence economy to support them join the money economy.
Through PDM, Museveni added, the Government will take services to the people in a more effective way and receive actionable feedback from them on wealth creation and Government-provided services to quicken socio-economic transformation.
There are 10,594 parishes in the country.
According to the sh48.1 trillion budget for the financial year 2022/2023, sh1.05 trillion was earmarked for PDM, which targets mainly 3.5 million households living under traditional or subsistence lifestyles.
“Successful implementation of the PDM ushers in a mass socio-economic transformation movement in our society with better-sustained outcomes. I, therefore, urge all leaders and Ugandans to ensure these resources are effectively used to bring about the desired change,” Kasaija said on June 14.
Each parish will receive sh100 million as a revolving fund to spur social-economic transformation within the parish.
