Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja today held a multi sector meeting, aimed at finding a permanent solution to Mt. Elgon Forest encroachment.
It was attended by line Ministers, Elgon sub region MPs ,LCV chairpersons,RDCs,and technical officers.
The challenge of Mt. Elgon encroachment dates way back in the 1930's.
Following a directive from the President to have this issue resolved, Nabbanja had an aerial tour of the affected areas, and later held a meeting at in Mbale town.
The line Ministers and the technical officers gave divergent observations after the aerial tour.
One group supported the status quo to remain, while others observed serious encroachment and called for immediate action.
Mt. Elgon and its Biodiversity is a critical national resource, benefitting two countries-Uganda and Kenya.
Findings from this field visit will be presented to Cabinet to guide in taking an informed decision.
