NEWS:Over ten reported killed, hundreds stranded as floods wreak havoc in Mbale.

 


At least more than  ten people have been reported dead, hundreds stranded and roads destroyed as heavy rain continues to wreak havoc in Mbale City.


The heavy rains pounded the region for over eight hours none stop hence causing flooding in most of the suburbs of Mbale city,as River Nabuyonga on Mbale -Kumi Road  flooded  four vehicles and six motorcycles taken away with ten people reported dead.


The most affected  areas are Nabuyo suburb, Busamaga, Kampala road, Namatala, Namakwekwe, Namabasa, Bugema, Bukasakya and Nabuyonga ward etc got flooded hence affecting traffic flow.


Mafabi Peter, a resident of Kampala Road that we got scooping water from his house said that it was his first time experiencing such floods, adding that all his beddings and other documents got soaked in water.


Nambafu Sarah resident of Milembe cell said that Nabugonga river flooded and water entered into her house hence making life hard  for her and two children who survived death.

 

"We last experienced this type of rains in 1997 where all the rivers surrounding Mbale got submerged and people died. We are worried that in case it continues more people will be killed and displaced hence causing an outbreak of water-related diseases," Nambafu said.


Magosha James chairperson Milenbe cell in Nabuyonga ward Mbale told Bugisu intellectual that "My people have been killed by floods and their property has been destroyed. They have also lost their animals. Poverty and famine is now looming."


Masaba Simon Peterson, another resident, appealed to government to pay attention to them. “We have been tremendously affected but our leaders have not intervened yet,” he said.


By the time we filed this story the downpour was still on, this has made residents remain fearful of being trapped by the floods.
