President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who also doubles as the chairperson of National Resistance Movement (NRM) party is set to hold an emergency meeting with top party members over the ongoing infighting in Herbert Ariko’s camp.
Ariko, the NRM party flag bearer is contesting with FDC’s Moses Attan in the coming Soroti East by election which is expected to be held on 28th of July 2022.
Multiple credible State House sources have intimated to the Grapevine that President Museveni was briefed on how top NRM and government officials are fighting each other which has resulted in suspending Capt. Mike Mukula from the role of leading Ariko’s campaigns.
Mukula, the NRM’s vice chairperson Eastern region was replaced by Sanjay Tanna, a renowned businessman who hails from Tororo,"Although Mukula has been replaced by Tanna,He has done for NRM all it takes for it to Win the Soroti East By-Election",one of the chairpersons said.
Sources revealed that Mukula was suspended because of the sharp misunderstanding between him,Vice president, and other Teso NRM leaders.
Sources explained that when the Vice President Jessica Alupo reached Soroti city, she took over Mukula’s role and she was the one issuing strategic orders which annoyed Mukula because he thought that in the absence of his chairperson, he had to take over as the deputy.
Sources said that Mukula lost his temper and even stopped his team from attending strategic meetings which were chaired by Alupo.
He resorted to chairing parallel strategic meetings at his posh home in Soroti city.
Sources further revealed that President Museveni was also briefed about the ongoing silent fight between Alupo and Annet Anita Among, the speaker of parliament, who also wanted to take charge of Ariko’s campaign because he was her Assistant before joining the Soroti East parliamentary race.
“The problem we have here is that the Vice President, the Speaker, Musa Ecwelu (State Minister Works), Gen. Jeje Odongo (Foreign Affairs Minister), Peter Ogwanga (newly appointed Minister of Education in Charge of Sports), Hellen Adoa (State Minister for Agriculture in Charge of Fisheries) are all fighting to catch the president’s eye. Everyone wants to show the president that they are the king makers in the region, that’s why they are fighting,” a source noted.
The source added that by removing Mukula from chairing Ariko’s campaigns in Soroti East, Alupo wants to show him that she is number two in the country and the king maker in Eastern Uganda.

When contacted, NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong confirmed the infighting but explained that it was just a misunderstanding in strategy on how to handle the campaigns.
He asserted that the reason why Mukula was changed is because they wanted a business person to lead their campaigns.
However, Mukula says that he has put all his efforts in the Soroti by-election to ensure that NRM wins, that is why he is working with NRM political leaders in the area like minister Echwelu.
Sources disclosed that Museveni is expected to hold a meeting today before or after campaigning for Ariko.
Sources added that Museveni is very bitter with the infighting because he thinks it will affect the NRM victory that is why he plans to quickly put his house in order before Thursday when voting is scheduled to take place.
FDC strongmen; Dr. Kizza Besigye, Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the FDC party president, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the FDC Secretary General, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, the FDC spokesperson, have all camped in Soroti to campaign for Attan.
Court of Appeal canceled Attan’s victory and ordered for a by-election.
