The National Unity Platform party candidate in the ongoing Gogonyo
County by-election, Joseph Opolot Okoboi has withdrawn from the race.
He announced his withdrawal on Sunday.It said his withdrawal is to pave and guarantee clear wining for the ruling NRM party candidate, Derrick Orone.
Teso Cultural Institution leadership has since announced that his withdrawal stemmed from the cordial discussion and engagement with the Opolot in a move to promote peace, unity and stability of the region.
According to Papa Emorimor of Teso, Mr Okoboi Opolot agreed to step a side and withdraw his candidature for any leadership role in Gogonyo in view of peace and unity.
“Upon my advice and in the interest of our people and the unity of the region, he has agreed to step aside and withdraw his candidature for any leadership role in Gogonyo,” read part of the statement.
Gogonyo county seat fell vacant after the court of Appeal ruled that the incumbent, Mr. Orone, was irregularly elected following a petition by his rival, Isa Bantalib Taligola.
The campaign period in the County begun on August 4th.
