MBALE FLOODS: Government Gives Shs5m to Bereaved Families

The government has started compensating families that lost their loved in the infamous Mbale floods with Shs5 million per family.

The exercise kicked off yesterday, 3rd August 2022 with the Minister for the Presidency, Milly Babirye Babalanda leading the team of government officials.

While launching the compensation exercise, Babalanda tasked Resident district commissioner and Resident City Commissioner from Bugisu and Uganda at large to start sensitizing the public about dangers of environmental degradation.

According to Babalanda, RCCs and RDCs must use government airtime allocated to different media houses to tell people about dangers of digging, living in wetlands and cutting down trees without replacing them.

She argued that the main cause of floods and landslides is environmental degradation which people should avoid to avert future disasters.

Ahamada Washakie, the Mbale Resident City Commission assured the Minister that they are going to implement the directive such that the environment and people can be saved.

He revealed that the exercise of giving money to families that lost their people which started yesterday will be concluded today (4th August 2022.)

The recovered number of people still stands at 23; twenty from Mbale city and three from Mbale district.
