NEWS:Nawangwe reappointed Makerere University Vice-Chancellor

 


Makerere University Council has reappointed Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe to serve his second five-year term as the institution’s Vice-Chancellor.

The university secretary, Yusuf Kiranda, in a letter to all staff and students dated Friday, August 12, 2022, communicated the council’s decision.

 

 

“Following the provisions of Section 31(4) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 (as amended), and on the recommendation of the university council, the chancellor has reappointed Professor Nawangwe for a second five-year term as Vice Chancellor of Makerere University with immediate effect,” Kiranda stated.

He noted that the university, “expresses its deepest gratitude to the chancellor and the University Council for recognizing Professor Nawangwe’s distinguished service and granting him the opportunity to serve another term as we celebrate 100 years. The University community congratulates Professor Nawangwe on this appointment and guarantees continued collaboration and support as Makerere University enters a new century of service to humanity,” Kiranda said.

 


Nawangwe was appointed Makerere Vice Chancellor and installed in September 2017 to serve for a five-year term, becoming the 11th Vice Chancellor of Makerere University since it was established as an autonomous institution in 1970.

He replaced Prof. John Ddumba-Ssentamu after the expiry of his five-year term of service from 1st September 2012 to 31st August 2017.

 

 

Nawangwe’s term of office was supposed to have expired on August 31, 2022. When he was inaugurated as the 11th Vice Chancellor of Makerere University on September 14, 2017, Nawangwe made a solemn promise to unlock the potential of Makerere University.

Path to a modern research university

As Vice Chancellor Nawangwe is credited with among others placing the University on the path of a modern 21st-century research university.

Prof. Nawangwe has also been instrumental in fighting land grabbers who had taken several pieces of the university land. Nawangwe together with the Minister of Education who is also the First Lady, Janet Museveni, are on the verge of resolving the 70-year-old Katanga land issue. Nawangwe helped recover Makerere’s prime land in Makindye that had been encroached on.
