Uganda’s leading opposition bigwigs have Monday agreed to work together to overthrow President Yoweri Museveni.
The leaders while addressing a joint news conference at Africana Hotel unanimously concurred to resume peaceful protests to engage the regime.
All top opposition leaders in the country including Col Kizza Besigye the founder of FDC, NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, JEEMA leader Asuman Basalirwa, Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, Leader of Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, and others attended the conference and consented to the proposals raised by their colleagues.
The development comes days after President Museveni fished DP chairman Norbert Mao and appointed him Minister of Justice.
The two principals signed a cooperation agreement which among others will facilitate a smooth transition of power.
“I am very excited this afternoon that we are witnessing all patriots here today, not thieves calling themselves patriots,” Col Besigye opened his speech.
He said, “The way to get back our power is to unite all of us and the population to be rallied together. Once that happens, I’m very excited that I can see it now beginning to happen.”
He reiterated his position of elections will never cause change in Uganda.
“Elections will not shift power from those who captured it with guns to the people of Uganda.”
On his part Bobi Wine agreed with his senior that indeed an election in Uganda play a little role in transition of power.
“We cannot pretend not to see that Museveni organizes elections, but in real sense, organizes a fight where he is over-equipped, and we are zero equipped,” he said.
“We go into the elections promising change, even when we know that when one becomes an MP, under the Museveni regime, apart from agitating, we can change very little,” he added.
