Minister of Internal Affairs, Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, yesterday 1st/September/2022 disclosed that Ugandans will have to pay Shs 200,000 for lost national ID replacements or make changes. Previously, the government has been charging Shs50,000.
While appearing before the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee of Parliament, Otafiire said that the new fee structure will force Ugandans to be very careful with their IDs.
“If you don’t want to pay the Shs200,000, then be careful with your ID,” he said.
However, the proposed fee structure has raised concerns among several members of parliament on the committee, with the chairperson, RoseMary Nyakikongoro, saying the fees are too high for ordinary Ugandans.
Nyakikongoro said that they will reject the new fee structure when it is tabled on the floor of parliament.
Butiru Constituency Member of parliament, Hon. Godfrey Matembu has opposed the Move of the Internal Affairs minister, Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, who had moved a motion on the floor of parliament for Ugandans to pay two hundred thousand Uganda shillings (200,00/=) for National Identification Replacement.
Hon. Matembu While making his submersion before the Internal Affairs Committee of Parliament & journalists, showed concern and challenged Gen Otafiire's suggestion.
"Why would you make poor Ugandans pay all this sums of money yet they pay Tax, How many youths can afford raising 200,000/= if they are even Jobless, lets not be so hostile and unfair to our own citizen" said : Hon. Matembu.
He further added on that NIRA will end up giving more attention to only those who can afford 200,000 /= for ID replacement leaving out the majority who cant afford it.
