WE WILL OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS TO UNIVERSITY TALENTED CHESS PLAYERS: UGANDA CHESS FEDERATION ANNOUNCES.

The Uganda chess federation has taken into consideration to support specifically in the field of academia the talented chess persons with inabilities to access institutions of higher learning.

With support from the International University of East Africa, the federation has organized for a two days chess tournament to spot out potential individuals and be awarded with scholarships and cash prizes.

The vice president of the federation Mr. Isaac Jonathan Otim told journalists on Thursday at the International University of East Africa in kampala that the event is to take place on 17th and 18th of September and open to anyone who can play chess and expecting the Minister for Education and Sports Mrs. Janet Museveni as the chief guest, members of the olympian team to be around, top players, genius and Mr. Harold Wanyama the national coach.

"The federation is offering an opportunity for education package in form of scholarship and grateful to develop talents especially of the under graduates and those finishing high high school levels" Otim said.

The tournament is expected to have over 800 participants with four games on each day for the two days therefore it shall be a chess rapid, the tournament director Mr. Kato Joseph said.

He however included that each game shall be played for 30 minutes and 10 seconds with categories of open, under 18, under 20, under  16, under 14, under 12, under 10, under 8, persons with disabilities and the veteran players.

Speaking journalists, the International Chess Instructor Uganda Chess Federation and organizer of chess tournaments in schools Mr. Kalule Rogers described that this is the first ever tournament across the country in universities specifically purposed at bridging the gap between talented students and the institutions of higher education.

Kalule also emphasized that the scholarships with the International University of East Africa for the first three chess outstanding players are 100% facilitated.
