M7 Rejects Signing the parliamentary pension payment scheme bill, Speaker Among puts blame on Media

When Parliament resumed business today 1st Nov. 2022 after a month’s recess, priority put on the reconsideration of the Parliamentary Pensions Amendment Bill, 2022 that President Museveni declined to assent to.

The law, originally introduced to ease the management and access to benefits by members, further introduced a clause on increasing contributions.

The core contention between Parliament and the Executive lies in clause 2 (b) of the Bill where MPs want government contribution to their retirement benefits to increase from 30 percent to 40 percent.

Mr Museveni, in an October 13 letter, rejected the proposal saying it was smuggled in, and poses great financial implication.

Speaker of parliament, Rt. Hon. Anitah Among  backlashes to a headline in Daily Monitor that MPs secretly increase their salaries by 40%.

"Monitor, if you have nothing to write, don't write about this Parliament of Uganda. Don't write about what you don't know. Pension is different from salary"  Speaker Noted.

Speaker  Among among further said that she had  noted incorrect & misleading media reports purporting that MPs had proposed to increase their pay & pension contribution.

According to her, this is erroneous & may be aimed at creating unnecessary public backlash against otherwise well-meaning legislators.

The Speaker of parliament adjourns the Plenary sitting prematurely due to the absence of several ministers.

"It takes a lot of time for the committee to handle these reports and when you come here, the ministers are missing. We shall start with this item tomorrow at 2pm" speaker Among.
