A section of leaders in Bugisu region have asked the government to accord an official burial to former minister Patrick Masete Kuuya who died in Nairobi, Kenya on Tuesday
Until his death 85-year-old Kuuya had lived in exile in Kenya for more than 37 years. He served as Minister for Rehabilitation in the second Obote administration from 1981 to 1985 when the military overthrew Obote and installed General Tito Okello Lutwa as head of state. Obote went into exile in Kenya and then Zambia where he lived until his death in October 2005. Kuuya was among several top government officials who ran into exile following the coup.
In a telephone conversation with URN today, Mary Gorret Kitutu, the Minister for Karamoja Affairs, who is also the Woman MP for Manafwa District, said that she has written to President Yoweri Museveni asking him to take over the entire burial programme. Kitutu says that Bugisu and the nation have lost an irreplaceable, developmental, and patriotic person who deserves a decent burial.
John Musila, the Member of Parliament for Bubulo East in Namisindwa District has urged his fellow leaders to take Kuuya as an example in terms of lobbying for their people. Musila adds that Kuuya has died but he will be remembered for lobbying for the construction of Mbale City Stadium and Mbale- Lwakhakha road in the 1980s.
Walimbwa Peke, the former Manafwa District chairperson urged all leaders from Bugisu to grieve together and not just see Kuuya as one from the Uganda People's Congress - UPC party.
Hakimu Watenyeli, the Elgon region UPC party mobilizer praised Kuuya as a person who loved his party during and after his time of leadership. Kuuya's body is still in Nairobi.
The call comes just two days after the official burial, on Monday, of Dr. Paul Kawanga Ssemogerere, the former leader of the Democratic Party who died on Friday last week.
