Rally Driver Champion, Lwakataka is tge Defending champion in the Weekend’s 300Km Kaliro Rally happening over the weekend.
Defending champion Ponsiano Lwakataka will face stiff competition from his closest rival, Umar Dauda when they take on each other in the300 kilometer Kakira sugar rally.
The two day rally that kicks off on Saturday 12 will involve scrutineering and a super special stage at Nakalama for the two leg event.
Ponsiano Lwakataka with 332 points had earlier won the first leg of the national rally championship against close rival Umar Dauda 208 and requires 100 points to become the overall champion.
The clerk of course, Alfred Mutanda while speaking during the launch yesterday, 8th November, 2022 said a total of 34 drivers have already confirmed participation in this year’s national rally championship.
Mutanda said flagging off will be at Kakira in Jinja and later a diversion at Magamaga in Mayuge, to Iganga before heading to Bugweri where there will be a diversion at Butaba trading center before heading back to Nakalama in Iganga to end the first leg of the event.
He said fans will be entertained to a double circuit at Nakalama.
ENSURING SAFETY OF FANS
Mutanda said to avoid a repeat of what happened in the previous rally event at the same venue, pavilions have been banned besides all motorists have been cautioned against parking along the road sides to avoid collision with the fast moving rally car
Road Side traders, hawkers have also been cautioned against conducting business during the two days or crossing the road to avoid being hit by the rally cars.
Ibrahim Lubega, the 52 points winner in the first rally event will also defend his title against his very closest rival, Oscar Ntambi 50 points in the two wheel category.
Mike Mukula 60 junior who won in the club man championship has also registered to take part in the event.
The vice president federation of motor sports Uganda, Roy Kibira said the event had earlier been planned to take place in Kasandha district but was diverted following an outbreak of Ebola.
Kibira urged politicians to utilize this chance to mobilize locals to attend the event in big numbers since it’s the only chance the area will benefit economically.
“At the end of the event, fans from places elsewhere would have bought all sorts of things leaving the money here to benefit the locals,he said.
He said 130 kilometers of the 300 in the race are competitive and will result in award of points to drivers who win.
The Regional Police Commander Busoga East, Samuel Asimwe urged locals to abide to regulations provided by security personnel during the event to avoid loss of lives or injuries as a result of accidents
Asimwe said police will be deployed at strategic points along the main highway in a bid to regulate fans from recklessly hanging at certain points to view the fast moving cars.
