Duncan Mubiru (Kikankane), navigated by Joseph Bongole in a Ford Fiesta Proto at the ongoing Kaliro Sugar Rally, the penultimate round of the 2022 National Rally championship, took the overnight lead with a time of 0:24:54:43.
He engaged in a close contest with Mike Mukula Jr. winning two of the three stages of the day.
Mike Mukula jnr clocked the second quickest time of 0:25:40:79 seconds behind Duncan Mubiru.
Mike Mukula is just competing in the CRC Title and is only doing 75% of the event, therefore he will simply run one stage tomorrow morning and finish his rally.
The fact that Mike Mukula Jr. will be competing in an NRC in the upcoming season indicates how quick he will be.
Byron Rugomoka is sitting third right behind Mike Mukula jnr clocking 0:26:18:58 seconds.
That means Byron Rugomoka will be sitting second right behind the rally leader Duncan Mubiru which is not good news for team Ponsiano Lwakataka.
And just to make things worse because of a mechanical issue with Duncan Mubiru’s car, it’s not known what will happen tomorrow since the misfire has resisted through the overnight.
Giving Byron chances to win this event, and if he wins, the championship will go down to wire in Western Uganda.
Since Mark Lubega and Mbabazi Daniel were given a penalty and managed to come back for rally 2 after a technical issue with the car in stage 1, their chances of winning the championship are now extremely slim.
Jonas Kasiime co-driven by Ivan Tushabe dropping a few seconds, also reduces their chances of winning the rally, until tomorrow to see if they can fight back to recover the list time.
Umar Dauda also experienced problems with the timing belt, which led to him retiring early and being penalised since he is coming back rally 2. His hopes of winning the championship are very slim now.
Based on the above, it looks like Byron Rugomoka’s chances are still high and he’s still moving strong and firm, eyeing the championship.
Racing continues tomorrow, day two with the Wandago stage 44.84km.
