The Lord Mayor of Kampala Erias Lukwago today presided over a ceremony to launch the Innitiative to plant One Million trees within a year in remembrance of our loved ones whom we have lost.
While speaking at the Ceremony the Lord Mayor said that despite Kampala having a rich biodiversity the recent tree Audit indicates that only 20% of tree species are indigenous and are at risk of extinction.
He encouraged residents to grow more indigenous trees which studies indicate are more effective in curbing air pollution.
He further said that Kampala risks becoming a concrete jungle if no steps are taken to find the balance between protection of green Infastructure and the rapid construction development,calling on the Attorney General to experdite the processing of the Green Infastructure Ordinance passed by the previous Council so that he the Lord Mayor can sign it into law.
Together with other guests present including the City Executive Secretary for Environment Hon.Olive Namazzi,MD Liberty Assurance and FAO Country Representative amongst others he signed a memorial book and planted a tree to mark the beginning of the effort to plant one million trees which will be undertaken by My Tree Innitiative a youth led organization.
