Newly-constructed Busamaga bridge in Mbale collapses four days after handover.

 


A portion of Busamaga bridge that connect Mbale -Bufumbo has collapsed and fell into the river on Saturday, December 24, 2022, four days after re-opening.


The bridge was destroyed by the heavy floods that hit Mbale city on the night of 3rd/ Aug/ 2022.

UNRA recently constructed a temporary bridge to enable residents access either side but collapsed again four days after its hand over putting the road users on risk.


Ssekyazi Hakim a truck driver told us that UNRA engineers did shoddy work, its good the incident happened during day time, people would have died.


Abbasa Magolo a resident of Nabweya top Mbale Northern city division informed us that, the govt should help them and work on this bridge, people will die from there.


He said, they would have returned the old Calverts, they were very strong compared to what they put. 


Mr. Abdallah Magambo Deputy speaker Mbale City told us that, it took four months for the govt to work on this bridge, since floods destroyed it.


Abdallah said, recently UNRA came and put a temporary bridge but its unfortunately it has collapsed.

"This is a death trap to everyone, we advised the engineers but they couldn't agree with us, now the bridge has collapsed, its a big shame all govt money has been wasted from here.


"I appeal to govt to come in faster and construct a good bridge  so that our people can access." Magambo said.

Mbale City RCC John Rex Aachilla accused UNRA engineers for doing shoddy work on this bridge.


Rex noted that this bridge was destroyed by the floods but its a shame to govt to see our people doing such works.

He added that residents have volunteering to put stones on the bridge to block the road users from danger as we wait government.
