Cavendish University Uganda (CUU) has paid tribute to the late Benjamin Mkapa who was the second Chancellor, from 5th Dec 2014 - 24 July 2020 for his great contribution to the institution.
Late Mkapa served as Cavendish University chancellor for six years out of the 14 years the university has been in existence.
President Mkapa died on July 24, 2020 at the age of 81.
The memorial lecture to honour Mkapa, a former Tanzanian President, was held on the 30th of November 2022, at Mestil Hotel Kampala and was attended by the ex-chancellor’s widow Anna Mkapa, Government officials & and other important invited guests.
In his tribute at the memorial lecture, CUU Vice Chancellor Prof John Mugisha started with a Bible verse from Matthew 5:8 (Blessed are the pure for they shall see God).
Prof Mugisha appreciated the late for his good work towards the university.
He described Mkapa as “the real personification of purity of heart,” “an embodiment of patriotism, Pan Africanism, diplomacy, peace building and concern for humanity,” as someone who “always made you feel welcome, cared for and in safe hands,” one whose “persona, leadership methods and guidance all radiated warmth,” and a man who “led in virtue and wisdom.”
Current Cavendish University Chancellor & Former Nigeria president Goodluck Jonathan, who delivered his message via Zoom, said the late Benjamin Mkapa was a Pan African man who worked not only for Tanzania as his country but also for the continent, and one who will be remembered for his tremendous work in the transformation of Tanzania’s democracy.
In her remarks, Anna Mkapa thanked those who came to honor her late husband.
The widow also encouraged participants to continue with the work they did with Mkapa.
“I bring more greetings from the family of the late Mkapa together with our deep gratitude to you vice chancellor Prof John Mugisha and your colleagues for honouring Mkapa,” said Anna Mkapa.
Anna describing her late husband as a man of integrit and for having been a caring father and good grandfather to their grandchildren.
In his keynote speech, Ambassador Ombeni Sefue, the Tanzanian Diplomat & the Chairman of Uongozi Institute, was glad that Mkapa’s memory was being kept alive and celebrated for the good, saying that it was the theme of the memorial lecture.
he said that the role of integrity and resilient leadership in managing transformation was appropriate in the context of the life, times and leadership experience of Benjamin Mkapa.
Ambassador Ombeni further said that late Mkapa as a leader who was incorruptible, honest, fair, and trustworthy.
He added that Mkapa had a straightforward conduct and had made it clear that he would rather be hated for being open than being loved for keeping quiet. Ombeni also noted that Mkapa always listened carefully to everyone, and was a staunch Catholic who valued work so much that even when he was bedridden he never stopped working. He further noted that Mkapa disproved the saying that politics has to be a death trap when he willingly handed over office.
The diplomat further told those attending the lecture: “Leadership is not a position. You don’t need to hold a formal leadership position to be a leader.”
