Freedom City stampede: MC arrested from hideout



Police have arrested the MC of the New year’s eve concert at Freedom City Mall, Namasuba where atleast 10 people died in a stampede.


According to Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the MC a one Elvis Francis Juuko was arrested from his hideout in Mityana District.

“He has been brought back to Kampala and is right now detained at Katwe Police station,” said Onyango in a statement on Friday afternoon.

The New year’s tragedy happened after the event’s MC reportedly encouraged attendees to go outside and watch the fireworks display.

A commotion ensued as the revellers rushed for fireworks from the hall, through a narrow corridor, to the only exit/entry point, after the local security guards had locked all the other gates. As a result, several victims were trapped, others trampled upon through the narrow passageway which became a real bottleneck.

Onyango says Juuko is charged with Rash and Negligent Acts.

Already, the promoter of the event, a one Abby Musinguzi alias Abitex was arrested and charged to court with 9 counts of Rash or Negligent Acts causing death C/S 277 of the Penal code Act.

Police had summoned the MC alongside the proprietor of the venue, the managers, other organizers of the event, ushers, bouncers and private security guards who were dedicated to the event.

Also summoned for questioning were police officers and other security personnel who were deployed to secure the event.
