The minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), through the National Oil Palm Project (NOPP) with funding from IFAD, contracted M/S Songoro Marine Transport Limited of Mwanza, Tanzania to design, build and deliver a ferry for Kiyindi-Buvuma route. The ferry costed USD 3,360,500 (Approx. UGX 12.5 billion).
The objective of procuring a bigger ferry is to improve the transportation of people, goods and services between Buvuma Island and the mainland at Kiyindi landing site.
The development of oil palm on Buvuma Island has increased movement of people, goods and services between the Island and the mainland, therefore MAAIF has procured a bigger ferry to improve transportation.
The capacity of the ferry is 519 passengers seated and 25 vehicles. The ferry has four engines and is fitted with the necessary navigation and safety equipment.
The ferry has been certified by marine surveyors and members of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) - (M/S Bureau Veritas (BV)
The ferry docked at the Portbell pier on 23rd February 2023 at 4pm.
The ferry was commissioned by the Permanent Secretary, MAAIF on Friday 24th February 2023.It will be handed over to Ministry of Works and Transport who will then hand it over to UNRA for operation and maintenance.
