National Resistance Movement (NRM) cadre Job Richard Matua has called for the resignation of Karamoja affairs minister Mary Goretti Kitutu as a probe into allegations of mismanagement of relief items continues.
“It is treasonous for a minister or her agents to divert items such as iron sheets meant for the underprivileged people in Karamoja." "There is hunger in Karamoja, and it is inhumane, insensitive, and extremely bad for the minister to divert the relief items such as iron sheets meant for the Karamoja region,” he said.
Addressing journalists at Wandegeya in Kampala on Wednesday, Matua also demanded that the minister apologize and return all the relief items allegedly in her possession to the Office of the Prime Minister.
This comes at a time when Members of Parliament are calling for a forensic audit into the distribution of relief items in Karamoja.
Matua, who is also a whistleblower in the recent National Social Security Fund investigation, has vowed to petition Parliament to investigate the minister and censure her if she is found guilty.
“We are tired of corruption. "That is why I am leading a team of patriotic Ugandans to rid the country of the vice," he said.
Matua appealed to President Yoweri Museveni, to consider appointing a person from Karamoja to the ministry position, saying they are the only ones who understand the plight of Karimojongs.
“The president gave responsibility to the minister to serve the people of Karamoja, but she has messed it up. So, how can we then blame the president? Was she sent by the President to take the iron sheet for Karamoja to Namisindwa? "The answer is no,” he added.
Matua described the President as a very good man: "His only weakness is being too patient with wrongdoers who make them multiply”.
Police investigations into the matter are still ongoing.
