In Namisindwa district, two men, Rogers Wabuya and Derrick Wamwangu, have reportedly faced the wrath of angry residents for allegedly engaging in sodomy.
The two men, both residents of Bukiabi sub-county, were taken into custody by residents from a lodge in Bumbo town council on Saturday.
An eyewitness, Fred Timbwa, said that the residents stormed the guest house following a tip-off from one of the workers. Mathew Nabiswa, a paternal uncle to Wamwangu, said that the residents came armed with machetes, axes, stones, bricks, and sticks to attack the duo. Fortunately, the Bumbo town council LC III chairperson, Joseph Kamuli, was able to rescue them.
According to Kamuli, Wamwangu was taken to Magale health centre III for treatment after sustaining ruptures in his anus while Wabuya is currently in custody at Bumbo police post.
The Bubulo East constituency MP, John Musila, condemned the act, stating that it only adds weight to the proposed anti-gay bill before the parliament. This week, parliament granted leave to the Bugiri Municipality MP, Asuman Basalirwa, to introduce a private member’s bill titled the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2023.
The bill seeks to prohibit any form of sexual relations between persons of the same sex and prohibit the promotion or recognition of such relations.
The incident highlights the ongoing debate about the criminalization of homosexuality in Uganda. The proposed anti-gay bill has been met with criticism from human rights groups who argue that it is a violation of individual rights and will promote discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.
It is important to note that homosexuality is currently illegal in Uganda and carries a potential penalty of life imprisonment. However, the proposed bill seeks to introduce even stricter penalties, including the death penalty for certain offenses.
