KAMPALA, UGANDA: Ugandan Senior Economist and permanent secretary in the office of the Prime Minister (OPM) Keith Muhakanizi is dead.
Muhakanizi who was in his early 60s is said to have died in Italy where he had been flown on Sunday for treatment, said to a family source without revealing the cause of his death.
Muhakanizi previously served as the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury before being deployed in the OPM’s office in the current cabinet.
Government Spokesperson and Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre Mr Ofwono Opondo described the late as a friend to many who served diligently especially in the office of the Treasury and in shaping Uganda’s economy.
“SAD! A friend to many. Keith Muhakanizi, Permanent Secretary Prime Minister’s Office, and former long-serving PS Ministry of Finance and Secretary to the Treasury has died from a Milan, Italy hospital where he has receiving treatment. May he Rest in Peace. Keith Muhakanizi was a friend to many because of his service. I commiserate with his family,” Ofwono Opondo said.
“I last spoke to Keith three weeks ago on the Mabaati saga when it broke out. Part of the reason the scandal broke out is because he disagreed with the political leadership in the Office of the Prime Minister,” he added.
Andrew Mwenda appearing on NBS Frontline Show said “Keith Muhakanizi reformed public sector finances by among others creating a single treasury account for government finances. He was incredible in terms of understanding how the system works.”
NUP’s Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi (Butambala) reacting to the news of Muhakanizi death said “I don’t think the legacy of Keith (Muhakanizi) is one we are going to celebrate because we are in a big mess now.”
Keith Muhakanizi was born in Rukungiri District to the late Rev. Kosia Kajwengye and the late Zeridah Kajwengye. He was born to a family of 7 children, 4 boys and 3 girls.
