Mbale City Speaker and four (4) others have been arrested by the state house anti-corruption unit over fraud and corruption related matters.
The speaker of Mbale city Mariam Nambuya together with her Clerk to Council Annette Buwule were arrested today 28th June 2023, by the State House Anti Corruption Unit over passing low property rates.
What you need to know:
Two months ago the speaker passed a 4% property rate despite the Town Clerk and City mayor insisting on the 8% rate.
In a meeting on Tuesday, the State House Anti-Corruption Unit ordered the arrest of the speaker to aid in the investigation to ascertain why she made such a decision.
Others arrested include Division Town Clerk, Mr. Martin Busiku who is being accused of fraudulent issuing of contracts worth 74 million shillings.
A source from the State House Anti Corruption Unit told the press that Martin didn't follow the procurement process and also didn't remit the money to the Contractors.
Mbale City Health Inspector, Mr. Charles Wanders was also arrested for failing to do his job in accordance with the law, and Mr. Hamidu Emmanuel Gidudu, an accountant arrested on accountability issues.
Currently, they are now being detained at Mbale CPS to aid in the investigation.
