Today, the 29th of June 2023,the Minister of Gender labour and social development Hon. Amongi Betty flagged off 390 workers set to work abroad in Dubai, UAE. The event took place at the Hays Recruitment Agency Headquarters in Lubowa.
The Hays Recruitment Agency has been in operation since 2016 and provides mainly semi-skilled & skilled job opportunities, offering both comprehensive training and cultural orientation for its recruits. Some of the jobs they have contracted have been in cabin crew, banking, accounting, and briefly the Qatar World Cup.
The Honourable Minister commended the recruitment agency for it’s consistent and unrivalled dedication to making sure that all their trainees are able to travel abroad for their work and additionally implored their dedication to giving them the opportunity to do semi-skilled labour outside housework which prioritises the workers themselves rather than the company’s profits.
Furthermore, the Honourable Minister gave the trainees important advice surrounding the difference in law enforcement and cultural norms in the UAE and encouraged the workers to keep touch with either the Ugandan Embassy located in Abu Dhabi or the various Ugandan Associations located in the UAE to aid them in case of any infringements on their rights or issues they face whilst working.
In addition to this, the Minister also offered financial advice to the trainees telling them not to squander their money and encouraging them to set aside a portion of their income to either put into NSSF or to put into a fixed deposit in their banks so they can gain an interest for their money.
Finally, the Minister brought attention to the economic advantages that the externalisation of labour has brought to Uganda noting that their remittances from abroad, which is the money that is sent back to relatives, brings 900 million USD or 3.4 trillion UGX into Uganda annually.
The executive director of Hays thanked the Minister for her support to the sector in terms of regulation, monitoring, and putting in place institutional framework for responding to distressed workers.
The executive director of Hays and an RDC representative also had brief speeches in the event.
