Aponye’s Wife: I was Speaking to my Husband then Phone went off, Shortly a call Came in that He was Dead
Aponye, died Thursday night in a car crash in Itojo, Ntungamo district, as he travelled to his upcountry home in Rukiga.
The affluent businessman was in a co-driver’s seat at a time his posh SUV-Landcruiser registration number UBF 300Z rammed into a station truck.
He is the only one that perished among the four occupants.
Aponye’s body was returned to Kampala, and on Sunday during a funeral service at the deceased’s Lubowa residence in Kampala, the widow narrated her last moments with the husband.
“We were on phone as he approached Itojo, the point of the accident. I told him to please travel safely and he replied they would go well, then the phone went dead. I called again shortly but it was busy. I called again it was busy.” She said.
Then a strange call came in briefly after that the person she spoke to a few minutes ago was no more.
“Then a call came through and I was told my husband was dead.”
Evangelist Nyegamehe also shared briefly the success story of a man, who pushed wheelbarrow, worked as a turnboy to make both ends meet but built a multi-billion empire.
Aponye, built his house at the age of 15, and married Evangelist at 20 in 1978.
Although Aponye had ‘stinking wealth’, unlike other rich men, he exuded rare qualities; humility, humbleness and few words but was a man of action.
Former Premier Ruhakana Rugunda described the life of the deceased as “text book” which was far reaching if picked from all angles.
“Aponye moved mountains without making noise.” Rugunda said.
In church, the tycoon was unrivalled, in politics he was grounded, in business he was established- a true definition of speak less act more.

With all the money, Aponye has been praised for answering every single phone call, from his phone book and strangers.
Condolences from across the country have been extended to the family. On Friday the President of Uganda Yoweri Museveni joined millions of mourners to condole the passing of not only a local investor but also a solid NRM supporter and leader.
According to funeral program released by the family, Aponye, will be laid to rest on Wednesday at his home in Muhanga Town Council, Rukiga District.
