Minister Amongi calls for Prioritising Labour & Capital to spur Economic Development of Wakiso District.




The minister of gender, labour and social development, Hon.  Betty Amongi Akena has called for prioritising labour and capital to spur economic development of Wakiso District.

 
The minister Made the remarks today, 14th July 2023, while delivering a keynote address at the closure of the Wakiso investment conference 2023, with the theme harnessing investment opportunities in Wakiso. 

The event took place at the Pieniel beach hotel in Entebbe municipality.

Minister Amongi stressed the importance of labour in the economy, noting that Wakiso district is the highest populated urban metropolitan city and holds over 60% of Uganda’s skilled workforce which supplies to both the government and the private sector in terms of decent employment and accommodation. 

Furthermore, she opined that Wakiso has the largest number of factories in the whole country, contributing to about 40% of the total revenue for the economy and therefore it is a giant that we must talk about and whose economic importance in the country must be addressed.
 
The Minister then delved into discussing the critical role labour and capital play in the economic development of a country. 

She noted that the labour force within Wakiso consists of those employed, and those looking for employment and for the government, labour is necessary for the production of goods and services and for Uganda’s economy to thrive. Hence, we must ensure that our labour force has integrity, is motivated, possesses entrepreneurial skills, and is qualified, efficient, skilled, and able to be held accountable.
 
"I call up on leaders to ensure that employers provide decent jobs, decent pay and high-quality social protection to the labour force so as to spur economic growth"- Amongi.
 
On capital, the minister finished by calling for the provision of cheap capital which includes tools, machinery, office buildings, computers, intellectual property skills and finance to support the production of goods and services.
