A fatal single-vehicle crash occurred on the Dokolo-Lira Highway in Uganda’s Dokolo District on Sunday afternoon, leaving the driver dead and multiple passengers seriously injured.
The driver of the 14-seater taxi, who was transporting passengers from Mbale City to Lira City, lost control of the vehicle after one of its tires burst around 1pm local time. This caused the taxi to overturn in the Agwata Forest stretch of the highway, according to Dokolo District Police Commander Patience Baganzi.
The driver, whose name has not yet been released, died at the scene. Their body was taken to a mortuary in Mbale City. The exact number of injured passengers is still unknown, but authorities say several were severely hurt and rushed to Dokolo Health Centre IV for treatment.
Dokolo Resident District Commissioner Barbara Akech said the driver had been attempting to overtake another vehicle when the crash happened on a corner of the smooth highway in Agwata Sub County.
She noted this particular area is known as an accident black spot, saying a retired head teacher was killed there just three days ago while crossing the road.
The police are still investigating the exact cause of the latest fatal crash. However, initial reports point to speeding and the burst tire as likely factors. This tragic incident highlights the need for increased road safety awareness and measures on Uganda’s busy highways.
