The State House Anti-Corruption Unit, in collaboration with the Uganda Police, has arrested Nakayima Stella Atwoti, the Secretary of Buwekula PDM SACCO in Jinja City, on charges of extortion.
Ms. Nakayima is accused of deducting money from the accounts of vulnerable beneficiaries of the SACCO.
According to the allegations, Nakayima would deduct UGX 100,000 from each beneficiary’s account of UGX 1 million, claiming that the money was meant for the Parish Chief. The beneficiaries, who are mostly old and vulnerable, were left with no option but to comply with the demands.
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit received a tip-off about the alleged extortion scheme and launched an investigation into the matter. The investigators reportedly found evidence to support the accusations, leading to Nakayima’s arrest.
The State House Anti-Corruption Unit was established in 2018 by President Yoweri Museveni to combat corruption in public institutions. The unit is headed by Lt. Col. Edith Nakalema, who has been credited with several successful anti-corruption operations in recent years.
