One dead pupil has been confirmed dead & over 100 injured in fatal accident in Manafwa- Police says.
Police in Elgon region has confirmed one pupil dead, and over 100 others seriously injured after a truck carrying pupils of Nakhupa Primary School overturned at Kufu trading centre in Manafwa district.
The fatal accident happened on Tuesday night 8th,August, 2023, at 10pm at Kufu trading centre, involving a Tata Lorry owned by Bukusu Corporative Enterprise Ltd Reg No. UBJ 994J which was ferrying pupils from music competitions.
Elgon region police spokesperson Taitika Rogers confirmed to Bugisu intellectual forum that one pupil who died in the accident but not 10 or 20 as alleged before.
Taitika identified the deceased as a 15-year-old pupil male juvenile, Thomas Naminayi a P6 pupil of Nakhupa primary school in Manafwa district.
"The truck had more than 100 pupils who sustained serious injuries are currently admitted at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital receiving treatmenttreatment," He said.
Preliminary findings indicated that it was due to reckless speeding from the driver which was the primary cause of the accident, according to Taitika.
He added that, the search is on to arrest the driver and be charged with driving with high speed and causing the accident which killed one child.
The body has also been taken to Mbale Regional hospital for postmortem examination before handing over to the family for burial.

A Single Fatal Accident was Registered Yesterday on 8-8-23 at 10:00pm at Kufu alongo Manafwa-Mbale Road, Manafwa District Involving M/V Reg UBJ 994J Tata Lorry belonging to Bukusu Corporative Enterprise Ltd.
It is alleged that the Driver of M/V Reg No UBJ 994J Tata Lorry one Godmas Mamai while at Kufu along Manafwa-Mbale Road while carrying pupils of Nakhupa Primary School while speeding lost control hence overturning and killing one pupil on spot one Naminayi Thomas M/J 16 years of age and injuring 117 others.
The Injured (117) have been rushed to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital.
Body taken to the same Hospital for postmortem.
M/V has been towed to Manafwa Police Station pending Inspection.
Driver is on the run.
Investigations have commenced.
The likely Cause of Accident is Reckless - Speeding.
