Mirembe murderer Dr. Mathew Kirabo Repatriated, Remanded To Luzira Prison.

Dr. Mathew Kirabo, who was convicted of murdering his girlfriend, Desire Mirembe, in 2015, has been remanded in Luzira Prison following his capture in Nairobi. The High Court in Mukono remanded Kirabo as further proceedings are awaited in his case.

Kirabo was convicted of murder in May 2022, but he had been on the run since then. He was arrested by Kenyan security operatives on Wednesday.

Justice David Matovu of Mukono High Court ordered his remand pending sentencing proceedings.

Evidence presented in court indicated that Kirabo killed Mirembe, a student at Makerere University, on July 11, 2015, following a disagreement. Her body was discovered in a sugarcane plantation in Lugazi, Buikwe District.

When Kirabo first appeared in court on October 6, 2021, he pleaded not guilty to the murder charge. He was granted bail, but he absconded court on November 3, 2021, leading to an arrest warrant being issued against him.

During the trial, Kirabo provided a confession, leading police detectives to the crime scene and explaining how he killed Mirembe. A video recording of his confession was presented as evidence in court.

Justice Isabirye based much of his judgment on this confession video, stating that the evidence was sufficient to implicate Kirabo in the murder of his then-girlfriend.
