Amongst the razor-thin margins in one of the Premier League’s most storied rivalries, heroes are born.
Declan Rice is the latest to anoint himself saviour as Arsenal secured a 3-1 victory over Manchester United at the death, electrifying the Emirates Stadium crowd with his stoppage-time winner, before Gabriel Jesus shut the door minutes later.
The two sides sat level through the entire second half, as Marcus Rashford and Martin Odegaard cancelled each other out before the break. VAR denied both teams the chance to go in front, with a penalty to Arsenal chalked off upon review on the hour mark before Alejandro Garnacho's 88th minute goal was nullified for offside.
Up stepped Rice, who gave Arsenal all three points by beating Andre Onana to his near post with a half-volley off a corner. It was a deserved victory for the hosts who controlled the match most of the way, but had to that point failed to capitalise on much of their attacking possession.
