Speaking to hundreds of people at the Second Annual National ICT Job Fair 2023 at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, Museveni revealed that he knows very well that there are smartphones but he distances himself from using them because he does not want them to divert him from thinking about important issues in the country, East Africa, Africa and the world at large.
“People are always asking why Museveni has been stuck on the Kabiriti. I have heard about smartphones, and seen them at a distance but in my work, I need to do more thinking than tinkering with data and so many things,” Museveni said.
He added that when he gets time, he calls a one Gracious Kamungu and other members of his social media team to brief him on what people are talking about on social media.
He encouraged the young generation not to waste much of their time on social media because it distracts them from critical thinking which is not good for them.
However, former State House operative and celebrated social, political and economic commentator Charles Rwomushana stated that smartphones are used by international intelligence organisations to spy on different individuals who they have interest in using Pegasus technology.
Rwomushana warned his colleagues including veteran political journalists John Kakande, the former New Vision editor and Peter Kibazo to avoid moving with their smart phones when going on private missions especially meeting their side dishes because they may be monitored internationally.
“For me when I go for my saunas, I don’t use these smartphones, I go with my Kabiriti phone,” Rwomushana stated.
Recent investigations establish that a neighbouring country was spying on top government officials, security officials and journalists through Pegasus technology.
However, the president noted that Digital innovation has potential to improve the quality of life of people because they are a bit independent in the area of food, some shelter items, and mobility and has the potential to improve the quality of life.
He added that the digital world is making things faster, more efficient, more traceable; “that is why I support the idea of digitizing government processes.”
On the same forum, Museveni revealed why he stopped army generals and top security officers from driving themselves in the cars because when driving themselves, they may be diverted to small issues which don’t matter.
“In the army, we do not allow the General to drive; because if he drives his mind moves away from the big issues to the small ones. It is not that I’m against smartphones, I think as a leader it is better to have less distraction,” he stated.
