Police Reports: 63 people die in road crushes in 1 week

The directorate of traffic and road safety in Uganda has disclosed that 423 crushes were registered from 23rd to 29th October across the country. This was revealed by the Traffic spokesperson Michael Kananura while addressing journalists at their weekly security presser in Naguru.

"Victims in these accidents were 401, whereas 63 people lost their lives 338 sustained injuries. Among the fatalities registered 25 were for motorcycles i.e 8 people were passengers traveling on these motorcycles whereas 17 were riders of these motorcycles, 32 pedestrians lost their lives for the period of one week.” Said Kananura

Kananura, attributed these accidents to careless over taking which had the highest contribution with a total number of 115 followed by over speeding which stood at 93.

He also updated the country on their ongoing operations as Uganda traffic directorate in the bid to reduce on these road accidents that continue claiming several lives forexample their “Fika salama extra”

"the directorate of traffic and road safety continues with the following activities and operations to ensure sanity on the roads. Fika salama extra activities of enforcement and sensitisations across the country, operations on emergency warning signs or reflectors with emphasis on goods vehicles and operations on boda bodas targeting those riding without crush helmets, reflective jackets and those carrying more than one passenger and other offences." Said the spokesperson 

He further revealed that their operations on drink-driving are also ongoing and he urged all motorists to abide to the designated traffic laws and regulations.
