On the 19th of October 2023, Parliament’s Trade Committee accused businessman Sudhir Ruparelia of using security operatives to stop Members of parliament from inspecting the progress of the construction works of the conference hall at Munyonyo despite government investment of Shs86Bn in this project.
Recently, Parliament approved the payment of Shs86Bn to Meera Investment Limited owned by Sudhir Ruparelia to construct a conference hall. Sudhir pledged 2.288 acres of land he says was valued at Shs16.4Bn.
Gov’t agreed to pay Shs38Bn to acquire 50% shares in Munyonyo resort, while the balance of around Shs48Bn was given to Sudhir as a loan for this project.
Parliament’s Trade Committee has learned that the Government injected Shs86.4Bn into the construction of Speke Resort Convention Centre yet Munyonyo Commonwealth resort's financial statements have never been audited for 4 years.
The conference center is expected to host thousands of delegates during the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in January 2024.
