The joint security agencies and other government partners impounded over 1000 heads of cattle from the balalos in the Acholi subregion and other parts of Northern Uganda over failure to comply with the presidential directive issued to them by H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
Last month President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni ordered the Balaalo (nomadic pastoralists) with non-fenced farmland in the Greater North to vacate the region in 3 weeks in response to the ongoing conflicts between the balalos and the northern Uganda Luo communities, who claimed the animals are being grazed on their agricultural farms.
According to the police spokesperson Fred Enanga most of the cattle that were impounded by the joint security agencies originated from Amuru where a total of 604 cows were impounded over non-compliancy.
“our teams managed to escort 500 heads of cattle from padel and Lamwo upto Karumwa bridge. Then in Aswa west in Gulu, 498 cows were impounded and then in Amuru 604 cows were impounded and in Nwoya 358 heads of cattle were impounded.” Enanga revealed
Enanga says a total of 1460 heads of cattle have so far been impounded from the cattle keepers due to failure to meet the land acquisition requirements and failure to comply with the presidential directive.
“these cows have been kept at the holding centres pending further action.” Said the police spokesperson
He however, applauded some of the communities that adhered to the presidential directive as he narrated
“we also have cattle keepers who have been compliant for instance in Gulu. About 105 cattle keepers voluntarily exited Gulu, then we also have in North Kyoga region that is Apach most of the cattle keepers are also voluntarily exiting the district and about 1000 cows that are in Maruzi government ranch.” Enanga stressed
He further stressed that their efforts are only aimed at implementing the president’s executive orders. The teams comprised of the Uganda police force, UPDF, joint intelligence components, RDC’s, LC5’s and CAOs.
