SP Michael Kananura - PRO Traffic

The directorate of traffic and road safety have disclosed that a total of 33 people died, while 156 sustained serious injuries from the road crashes during this year’s festive season across the country, from 23rd to 26th December 2023.

“Among the fatal accidents registered pedestrians and riders constituted 5% of which most of these crashes happened upcountry, the highways were peaceful.” Said the traffic PRO Kananura

He noted that the major accident happened in Kapchorwa which occurred yesterday at 4pm involving a motor vehicle Reg.No UBD 074J Prado LandCruiser, which claimed the lives of 5 people who included 4 children and their mother. He adds that the accident also injured 4 others including the driver of the motor vehicle who were both on the same vehicle.

According to the traffic spokesperson, few accidents were registered by their directorate in this year’s festive season compared to the previous season.

He attributed this to their recently introduced initiatives to curb some of the causes of these accidents, which among others included heavy deployments on the highways, road safety awareness campaigns in conjunction with other stakeholders, operations on drink-driving, participation of the general public and other road users who kept on notifying the traffic police incase of any violators.

“we continue to urge the members of the public and other road users to continue observing all traffic laws and regulations as you travel back from wherever you had travelled to. We continue to urge you to observe our speed limits and to continue being vigilant especially whenever you want to overtake.” Kananura noted
