UPC's president Hon. Jimmy Akena
The party president of the Uganda people’s Congress (UPC) an opposition political party Hon. Jimmy Akenas has expressed concerns over the worrying state of the healthcare facilities currently in the country.
According to Akena, the current government's failure to improve the health sector has forced the well-off Ugandan citizens to fly out of the country in search for better healthcare services.
“Our health facilities are struggling to meet the demands we face. As a result, many people with resources are opting for alternatives to the government system,” Akena stated
He also disclosed that the alarming situation has further forced several professional doctors to fly out of the country to search for greener pastures which has culminated into shortage of medical experts in the health facilities.
At the same juncture, he also extended his condolences to the family, friends and the country at large for the loss of Hon. Cecilia Ogwal who has been the great pillar this nation in regards to democracy.
“UPC recognizes and accepts the late Hon. Cecilia Ogwal’s contribution towards spearheading Democracy in Uganda,” said Akena
He however noted, that the fallen MP Cecilia Ogwal and many others who died outside the country wouldn’t have travelled abroad for medication if our health sector was well equipped.
“I was very surprised when i saw very many Ugandan Doctors turning up to give a helping hand when my father was admitted in a South African Hospital.” Akena explained
Akena also commended the efforts of Uganda people's Congress led by his late father Dr. Milton Obote in ensuring that the women were also recognised in Uganda’s leadership positions, pointing out the late Cecilia Ogwal as one of the beneficiaries at that time.
“UPC was the first Government to empower women like Cecilia Ogwal into political leadership positions. No other party had done this. Not even the Democratic Party (DP), which is the oldest political Party in Uganda,” he added.
