While attending church Nankoma Catholic Church Bugiri last Sunday, Abenakyo Joanita, urged parents to be actively involved in the education of their children. She noted that while it is the responsibility of the government to provide education, parents cannot abdicate their responsibility to provide basic needs for their children.
Abenakyo acknowledged that when it comes to securing access to quality education, renovating school facilities is meaningless if parents do not prioritize their children’s education. She also applauded schools for instituting that young children start learning in their mother tongue.
Abenakyo is a medic and incoming politician with interests of contesting in 2026 as woman Member of Parliament representing Bugiri District.
She was concerned that most parents are not actively involved in the education of their children, thus leading to poor performance In Busoga region, most especially in Bugiri District.
“Why are families failing to feed our children? Someone produces a child and they are unable to feed them, what does this mean? When I talk about this, I am not talking about only mothers but also the fathers,” Abenakyo said.
Abenakyo said that Government replacing the dilapidated structures with new ones will not be meaningful if parents don’t prioritize their children’s education.
Busoga region, most especially Bugiri,Mayuge & Kamuli are rated poorly rated in terms of Education.
The school dropout rate has been attributed to a “high risk of low economic status even in adulthood due to unemployment, low paying jobs, alcoholism, and poor health, among others.” The findings dovetail with those of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics that make clear the fact that children are hailing from low income .
