Police registers 31 criminal deaths during new year’s eve

The Uganda police force have disclosed that 55 cases of criminality were registered across the country during the new year celebrations, killing 31 people, injuring 17 victims which lead to the arrest of 27 suspects who were linked with the crimes.

“Out of the 31 lives that were lost, 5 victims were lynched on suspicions of theft and 6 were hacked or stabbed to death, 4 committed suicide, 2 suspectedly poisoned to death, 3 perished in fire outbreaks, 2 were hit using blunt objects and 2 died as a result of aggrevated domestic violence. 2 drowned , 2 died due to rush and negligence acts.” Said the police spokesperson Enanga.

According to Enanga, most of the murder offences committed during the new year's eve happened in bars including other local drinking joints.

He also says murder by sturbing and murder by mobs were on the rise during the just concluded new year celebrations.

“forinstance out of this break down, murder by hacking had 5, murder by mobs 5,suspected murders 5, fire outbreaks 3, assault 3, suicide 2 then the rest we registered one case each.” Said Enanga

He further disclosed that Rwenzori west region registered the highest number of cases, followed by North Kyoga region and Aswa west region with 5 cases each.

Enanga also notes that by 2nd of January they had received a total of 4,649 suspects from 27 regions, who were charged with various offences. Of these, 4,039 suspects were male adults, 242 female adults, 68 were male juveniles and 3 female juveniles.

“We want to inform you that generally the general security situation within the country and along the borderlines during the Christmas season was first of all successful and again during the end of year celebrations were peaceful with no incidences of security breach apart from some isolated incidences of criminality which were not organised in nature.” Enanga said
