As the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit kicks off in top gear at the Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, the leadership of the Uganda people’s Congress(UPC) an opposition political party have urged the member states to focus more on the most straining issues hindering the development of their economies for example heavy debts, food insecurity, climate change among others.

“The heavy debt burden has enslaved NAM members since the Arab-Israel war of early 1970s and this has reduced the capacity to invest in our economies and trade as well as creating viable opportunities for the youthful population. UPC calls upon the ongoing NAM summit to come up with practical solutions to the debt trap.” Said UPC’s head of communications Muzeyi Faizo

He also noted other key factors that NAM summit needs to throw more emphasis on a number of which included food insecurity, climate change, poor health, high rate of unemployment, migration and terrorism among others which he says if solved could help restore the lost hope amongst their citizens.

Upc has also urged the Non-aligned movement member states to invest more in science and technology which could play a big role in value addition of their raw materials.

“UPC demands for massive investments in innovation and technology that can boast large scale production as well as heavy reliance on our local raw materials.” Said Faizo

Faizo further urged the NAM members who have made a breakthrough in development to act as a role model to inspire others, which is consistent with the theme of the ongoing NAM Summit, “deepening cooperation for shared global affluence”.

In other developments, Faizo applauded UPC’s regional and district leadership for their cooperation with the National secretariat during the national mobilization tours which he says were successful.

“UPC would like to thank the people of Dokolo District for the wonderful reception they gave to the party president Hon. Jimmy Akena on his ongoing nationwide mobilisation tours on Saturday 13th January 2023, which is in line with the demands of the 2025/2026 electoral roadmap released by independent electoral Commission.” Faizo stated

He added and said that it’s through these mobilisation tours that recruitment is done as well as encouraging members to stay focused on the task which lies ahead of them, adding that it’s equally the right time to reach out to all potential members who will carry the UPC flag at different elective positions to start getting prepared for both internal processes and the 2026 general elections.

He also reminded the potential members for special interest groups that includes the youths, elderly, PWDs and women that their elections are getting closer and therefore should start their preparations.
