Ismail Kirya - UYD president
The president of the Uganda Young Democrats(UYD) a section from the opposition political party of DP, Ismail Kirya has called for the establishment of the electoral service Commission as the country gears up for the 2026 general elections.
According to Kirya, the service commission will be in position to scrutinise who the best candidates are inregards to the appointment of the available positions in the Uganda electoral Commission a body that conducts these general elections in the country.
“the president would be left to choose his suitable candidates, who would later proceed to be vetted by the electoral service Commission hence recommending only the best for those positions." Kirya said
He also notes that this is the right time for the leaders to start making the arrangements for the electoral reforms if the country is to have a free and fair elections in 2026.
“If we go in the coming elections with the current constitution, what may come out could be generally dismissed and not accepted by the public.Let is be very much conscious about what we are doing at the moment because we are giving a disservice to this nation” Kirya said
It should be noted that last year the Opposition in Parliament led by Mathias Mpuuga launched a consultative workshop on proposals for the amendment of the Constitution to introduce reforms that would improve the country’s political landscape.
Among the key issues that the opposition have continued outlining in the bid to amend the electoral Act include among others; addressing the issue of militarisation of politics and defining the role of the army and other government security agencies during elections, the reinstatement of the presidential term limit which was abolished, the criteria used in the appointment of the members of the electoral Commission among other key issues.
