NIRA denies asking for UGX. 40,000 per day as a surcharge from citizens who delay to renew their IDs.

  Osborne Mushabe - PRO NIRA

The National identification and Registration Authority(NIRA) have distanced from the false information circulating allover the social media platforms, indicating that the registration authority shall place a fee of 40,000 Ugandan shillings per day on citizens who might delay to renew their National identification cards in the coming exercise.

Osborne Mushabe who is the head of public relations revealed that NIRA’s board and the ministry of internal affairs have already approved amendments to the registration of persons regulations of 2016, and some of the fees currently provided for by the law shall either be abolished or amended before the commencement of the mass enrollment and mass renewal exercise.

He says the amended regulations are currently before the attorney general for clearance before they’re published in the Uganda gazette as the new regulations for fees

“Once gazetted the public shall be duely informed” said NIRA’s head of public relations.

He however, noted that when the attorney general clears, no citizen will be required to pay any money as provided for under regulation No.23 of the registration of persons regulations

“we would like to inform our dear citizens that the mass renewal exercise will be for free and we will not charge you anything.” Mushabe further stated
