Bugweri, (UG):- Bugweri Chiefdom, one of the eleven traditional chiefdoms in Busoga Kingdom has apologized to the Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Anita AMong over ‘the uncivilized and unruly statements’ made by National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy spokesperson Mr. Waiswa Alex Mufumbiro during a burial where she was the chief mourner.
While at the burial of Counsel Waiswa Ramathan, a young brother to Bugweri County MP Hon. Abdul Katuntu at Butende Village in Busesa Town Council on Thursday, April 04, Mufumbiro furiously pinned Ms Among for allegedly involving in corruption and also asked her to back off former Speaker Rt. Hon Alitwala Rebecca Kadaga from their parliament wars.
Mufumbiro’s comments followed controversial statements by Speaker Among at her marital home in Buyende District last month where she veiled a message that ‘old women from Kamuli were fighting to return to the speakership office, something which was interpreted by the audience being directed to Kadaga, the Woman Member of Parliament for Kamuli district.
The comments by Mufumbiro however did not sit well with a section of cultural leaders in Bugweri Chiefdom, who have now written to the Speaker of Parliament distancing themselves from the statements and apologized for the same.
In a letter dated April 5, 2024, addressed to the speaker of parliament Rt. Hon Among and signed by the 3rd prime minister and special envoy to Menhya Wa Bugweri Mr Mugwisa Mwamadi, the leaders including cultural ministers in the chiefdom, cultural sub-county chiefs and clan leaders apologized for the statements with strong condemnation saying they embrace leaders irrespective of age, sex and or tribes.
“We the ministers, Abamagombolola (sub-county chiefs in culture) and clan leaders of Bugweri chiefdom take our sincere apology on the statement made by Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro during the burial of Counsel Waiswa Ramathan. We would like to condemn it with the strongest terms possible as Obwa Menyha, we respect and embrace all leaders irrespective of their tribes, sex, age, among others,” the apology letter, copy of which DailyExpress has seen reads in part.
Mr Mwamadi, attached with the letter an attendance list of 30 members who commended Rt. Hon. Speaker for her contribution of shs100m toward the construction of Bugweri Muslim district headquarters. The cultural leaders in Bugweri chiefdom, the members asked for a physical meeting with the speaker to relay their apology.
“As ministers, Abamagombolola, clan leaders we are therefore seeking an appointment and a visit to you so that we relay our apology before your face-to-face as a delegation from Obwa Menha wa Bugweri with over 30 people including ministers as annex,” the letter adds.
However, responding to the letter which has gone viral on social media, Prime Minister Bugweri Chiefdom Mr Godfrey Nabongo via a WhatsApp group dubbed ‘Bugweri at Heart’, referred to the author and associates of the letter as masqueraders before saying that; “Obwa Menha bwa Bugweri will issue a formal statement in this regard tomorrow.”
