The Territorial Police at Katwe Division in Kampala are currently investigating circumstances under which an unidentified man, armed with a panga, invaded a resident’s home before he was shot and killed by police in a harrowing incident of attempted murder on Monday morning.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson Mr Luke Lwoyesigyire Monday said the assailant forcefully entered the home of Anita Ayebare, a resident of Bongole Zone, in Ndejje, Makindye, and menacingly demanded a ransom was shot dead as the Police rescued four children he had kidnapped.
“The territorial Police at Katwe are currently investigating a harrowing incident of attempted murder that occurred today, April 29th, 2024, at approximately 10:30 am. It is reported that an unidentified assailant, armed with a panga, forcibly entered the residence of Ms. Ayebare Anita, 25 years old, a resident of Bongole Zone, while she was having breakfast with her children,” Mr. Owoyesigyire said in a Monday police statement.
According to the KMP Deputy Publicist, the assailant demanded sh5m, and when Ayebare resisted, the perpetrator turned his aggression towards her four children and started cutting them with the panga.
"The assailant, threatening violence, demanded a sum of five million in cash from Ms Ayebare Anita. When she resisted, the perpetrator turned his aggression towards her four children: Atuhaire Lucia (2 yrs), Ampaire Maria Zoe (5 yrs), Musiime Blair (7 yrs), & Ankunda Godius (14 yrs),” Owoyesigyire said.
He explained that the assailant, injured the children in the process and the police were forced to shoot him dead after he resisted arrest and also saved the infants he had started cutting.
This publication learned that the suspect had locked up the family in the house and the Police were forced to get in by removing iron sheets from the roof.
“Thanks to the swift response of both local residents and the police stationed at Mirimu, the assailant was subdued. It was later realized that he had inflicted injuries on the children,” Owoyesigyire said, adding that “the children were immediately rushed to Nalujja Medical Centre, Bata Bata, Entebbe Road, for urgent medical attention,” although “their condition remains critical.”

Meanwhile, police said the body of the suspect was conveyed to City Mortuary Mulago for a postmortem, as investigations continue with the aim of ascertaining his identity and motive.
