Over 1,000 students of Kyambogo University in illegal centres, says NCHE

THE FUTURE of 1,129 students of Kyambogo University hangs in balance, since the National Council for Higher education says they are being taught from illegal centres.

The letter from National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to Kyambogo notes that Kyambogo University has continued to operate two (2) illegal learning centres/campuses in Bushenyi and Soroti, contrary to our directive in a letter dated February 9, 2024 warning.

In a July 2, 2024  letter seen by this publication show that the National Council for Higher Education told the University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Elly Katunguka, “We have also established in the recent field visits that Kyambogo University is operating three (3) other illegal campuses, namely at former Kamurasi Primary Teachers’ College (PTC) in Masindi, former Kabwangasi PTC in Butebo, and former Bukedea PTC in Bukedea, contrary to Section 25 of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 (as amended).”

The law stipulates which stipulates that “The location of a Public University established under this Act shall as may be provided in the instrument establishing it; however, that University may, with the prior approval of the National Council, establish a branch or a campus of the University in any other part of Uganda.”

The letter adds, “We wish to remind you that NCHE does not recognise qualifications tenable from unapproved centres/campuses.”

“The purpose of this letter, therefore, is to further require Kyambogo University to close the said illegal centres/campuses, and any other unapproved campuses that could be operating, with immediate effect,” adds the letter.
