Thursday, August 08, 2024, will go down in history at Cavendish University as 707 students including the Opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine graduated with Bachelors, Diplomas and Certificate Programs.
Cavendish’s colourful 13th graduation ceremony was held at Billionaire Dr Sudhir Ruparelia’s Magnificent Speke Resort Convention Center – Munyonyo, a modern facility in Kampala which early this year hosted the international NAM and G-77 Summits.
The highlight of the day was the unrare scenes when Bobi Wine got conferred his long-awaited Bachelor of Law Degree attracting wild ululations from fellow graduates and the guests in the hall.
“This is nothing compared to what I’m supposed to learn. I can only keep learning,” Kyagulanyi, a former presidential contender said in a brief interaction with journalists, adding that he should have graduated with the class of 2023 but he had a backlog of missed lecturers which hampered the occasion.

Cavendish University is privately owned by Africa Education Holdings (AEH) with Peter Kagunye as its Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Fully licensed to operate in 2008, the University has over the years been recognized by the Consumer Choice Awards as one of the leading private tertiary institutions in Uganda.
Hosting its graduation at Speke Resort Munyonyo is a testament to Tycoon Sudhir’s endearing contribution to the private sector, particularly the hospitality industry.
“…because I had missed a few lectures in one of the course units, I wasn’t allowed to graduate [in 2023] but instead subjected to another semester of re-attendance for that course unit.”
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, who is the Chancellor of Cavendish University, told the congregation that Thursday’s graduands had “emerged as leaders and innovators ready to make a difference in the world after exceeding high CUU standards.”
The Minister of Information, Communications Technology and National Guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi in his speech urged the graduates to follow the ethics in their profession and fight the itching virus of corruption in Uganda.
“Let us work together as a young team to live in a free corrupt country and continent of Africa,” Dr Baryomunsi noted.
The Minister further urged the graduates to protect themselves from diseases such as HIV/AIDS because their future is still bright and not to expose their bodies to people in offices in a way of looking for jobs.
He also used the same opportunity to congratulate Bobi Wine upon the landmark achievement saying; “I take the opportunity to congratulate him. Maybe after his LDC, we shall consider him in the Attorney General’s office.”
Justice Monica Kalyegira Mugenyi, the commencement speaker at the occasion challenged the class of 2024, including Bobi Wine, on the “essence of transformational leadership.”
“The civic space is in dire need of men and women that will purpose not to take from their countries but to give back to them; not to misdirect their gullible communities but to conscientiously guide them; not to rob or impoverish the people in whose name they serve but to provide them with inspirational leadership, not to be drawn to myopia but to build upon our forefathers’ probity,” she explained.
Meanwhile, Cavendish Vice Chancellor Dr Olive Sabiiti announced three new innovation-led academic programs the university has added to its portfolio which are aimed at addressing global tech-driven market demands effective the August 2024 intake.
“These programs include the Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, a Diploma in Data Science and Analytics and an Advanced Diploma in Health Leadership and Management. These programs are a testament to our commitment in staying relevant,” she observed.
