The late Minister of State for Defence, Sarah Mateke Nyirabashitsi who passed away on Saturday will be buried on Thursday, September 12, in Kisoro District, DailyExpress can confirm.
This is according to the funeral programme released by the Parliament of Uganda where the late Minister served as the District Woman MP for Kisoro District.
The Speaker of Parliament, Hon Anita Among while releasing the funeral program said it was drawn up after consultations with the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, the family, the national organizing committee, and other stakeholders.
The funeral program includes a series of activities leading up to the burial date.
On Monday, September 9, the body will arrive at her home in Nsangi, Wakiso District, followed by a church service.
On
Tuesday, September 10, a church service will be held at All Saints
Cathedral, Kampala, before a special sitting at Parliament.
On Wednesday, September 11, the body will depart for Nyakabingo in
Kisoro District, where a council session, church service, and overnight
vigil will take place.
The late minister will be laid to rest on Thursday, September 12.
Mateke Nyirabashitsi was appointed Minister of State for Defence in a March 2024 cabinet reshuffle, replacing her previous role as State Minister for Children and Youth Affairs.
Born on July 15, 1974 in the Chahi subcounty, Kisoro District, Nyirabashitsi attended Seseme Integrate School then Maryhill High School for her secondary education.
She joined Bugema University and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.
She
also held a Master’s degree in Public Health from the same University
and a Postgraduate diploma in Public Administration and Management from
Uganda Christian University
Nyirabashitsi run family businesses, including timber production and transportation before she founded Nyirabashitsi Foundation where she supports children to join boarding secondary schools from senior one to senior six.
She was the chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Metropolitan International University, Makerere Metropolitan Management Institute, Kampala.
She joined public service as Assistant Town clerk of Kisoro town council. In 2021, she contested for woman member of parliament of Kisoro District in Western Uganda and won against then incumbent Rose Kabagyeni.
