‘They’re always shouting as if God is deaf’- Museveni’s Critique of Church Noise Triggers Mixed Reactions

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s recent comments criticizing some churches for their high noise levels have ignited debate among Ugandans.

In his address, Museveni expressed concern about excessive noise during worship services, suggesting that some churches behave “as if God is deaf,” and called for a reduction in the volume of their activities.

The President’s remarks have brought attention to the delicate balance between freedom of religious expression and the need to maintain peaceful communities. Many agree that the noise generated by certain churches can be a disturbance, especially in residential areas.

Religious institutions, they argue, should consider the impact of their activities on the surrounding environment and aim to foster harmony within their neighborhoods.

However, some have pushed back, emphasizing that religious worship is a deeply personal and spiritual experience. Worship styles vary across different denominations, and for many, louder forms of worship are central to their faith traditions. Critics of Museveni’s comments argue that noise should not be equated with the sincerity or authenticity of one’s devotion.
