The pronouncement was made this morning by the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda H.E Zhang Lizhong in a meeting with the Prime Minister of Uganda Rt Hon Nabbanja Robinah at OPM offices in Kampala.
According to the Ambassador, the donation is in response to the hunger crisis in Karamoja that is affecting more than half a million people. This is attributed to limited surface water, a hot, arid climate, and a short season of torrential rains that causes soil erosion and land degradation.
The Premier expressed Uganda's gratitude for the emergency food assistance that has come at critical time when people of Karamoja are experiencing food insecurity and need urgent relief.
The rice is expected in the country in December 2024. Uganda enjoys strong historical relationship with China.
Karamoja Affairs Minister Peter Lokeris, Disaster State Minister Lilian Aber, Minister for Kampala Hajat Minsa Kabanda & PS Dunstan Balaba attended the meeting among others.
