Bugisu Mudslides: 10m Is Too Little To Relocate A Family-Mp Mukhaye Boldly Tells PM Nabbanja & Her Ministers

The member of Parliament representing the people of Mbale District, Hon. Mariam Mukhaye has assured the office of the prime minister that Ten million shillings (10) per household isn't enough to relocate people affected by mudslides in various parts of Bugisu.

Miriam mad a statement yesterday, 12th December 2024, during  a stake holders metting in Bugisu sub-region, which was being chaired by the prime minister, Hon. Robinah Nabbanja.

This occurred when PM Nabbanj issued a two weeks ultimatum to all the people living in landslide prone areas of Mt Elgon to vacate or else face forcefull eviction by government.

According to Hon. Miriam, this is a public outcry from the beneficiaries. "My people say that 10m is not enough for them to move with their families to newlocagions. Take for example, a family owns land where they also curry out farming on a large scale, but given 10m to move away, this is not fair at all" - Mp Mukhaye narretted.

The Premier is currently camping in Bugisu sub region to oversee immediate  relocation of the people in disaster prone areas.

This follows rampant landslide disasters with the latest claiming 36 people, many missing and scores injured in Bulambuli.

Rt Hon Nabbanja spent part of the day in Bududa district in Eastern Uganda part of the landslide prone areas.

Before she embarked on climbing the hill and slopes of the mountain, Nabbanja met area leaders to brief them about President Museveni’s message of immediate relocation of the people in the region to safe places.

The Premier was taken to the areas that developed a huge crack but with some people still on the hill close to the areas waiting for compensation from government.

According to local leaders the crack covers over 70 kilometre stretching to Kapchorwa district.

According to Nabbanja, the current relocation phase features a new cash transfer policy, which provides each household with shs17 million shillings (shs10 million from the government and shs7 million from development partner GiveDirectly), along with two acres of land in Bunambutye.

"This policy aims to empower families to build their own homes compared to the previous model of providing fully constructed houses" Nabbanja reiterates.

Upon the guidance of the President, government has allocated 50 billion shillings to resettle the remaining over 5000 households.

Bududa is one of the places  prone to landslides in the region due to its location near Mount Elgon volcano and the geology of the area. Some of the most destructive landslides in the district include:
March 1, 2010: A landslide buried three villages, killing 400 people and displacing 5,000

2012: A landslide killed 450 people and displaced many others.

October 2018: A landslide and flooding killed 42 people, displaced more than 500, and destroyed roads and bridges.

December 2019: Heavy rainfall caused landslides that killed people and destroyed houses and crops.
